Micro-blogging is a concept that has become popular with services like Facebook and Twitter. Micro-blogging is a different way of communicating that complements email and Instant Messaging (IM). The core concept behind micro-blogging is short, frequent status messages that can be seen by people who want to know what you're up to.
Status updates are short, 140 characters messages that tell your co-workers what you're doing or what you're thinking. These updates are visible to everyone across your company. These micro-updates give everyone a sense of what their co-workers are doing.

A key difference between email and social networks is how conversations take place. When you send an email, only you and the recipients will see the message. While this exchange of information is private, it lacks the benefit of open communication with your co-workers. What if someone else has an opinion or critical information on that topic? Employees need to have tools both for private conversations (email, IM) and more public ones (social networks).
Most activities in the CubeTree system generate feed items. You can think of a feed item like an email message. You can comment on any feed item that you can see . When you make a comment, the person who performed the activity that generated the feed item is notified via email. If other people commented before you, they will also be notified by email when you add a comment.
The result -- a public conversation in which others can join.

By default, activities and comments in CubeTree are visible to everyone in the network. However, to save everyone from being overloaded with all the activities and comments in the system, you can choose which content you want to receive. This is another difference between email and social networks.
With email, you don't control which emails you receive -- the sender does. With social networks, you’re always in control. You pick which people, groups, and wiki pages you want to keep track of. (This is called "following"). If a topic or person is no longer relevant, you just stop following them. Discover someone new? Start following them and you'll see their activities along with the topics and people you are already following. Only the information you want to receive gets sent to your home page.

You can choose not only whom you want to follow, but also what types of feed items you want to receive. If there are particular types of feed items you don’t want to receive from people you follow, simply set your feed settings preferences and filter them out.

With CubeTree, everyone within your company can share ideas and opinions with everyone else. Sometimes you’ll want to write a message that you want someone specific to be sure to see. If you type the "@" symbol followed by the user's name, CubeTree will send an email to the person with a link back to your content so that they're sure to see your post.

At CubeTree, we believe that not all the activity you want from your micro-blogging system comes from the system. So in addition to all our built-in tools like Wikis and Blogs, we also make it easy for you to integrate with numerous third- party systems.

One of our most popular integrations is with Twitter. With CubeTree, you can share your tweets easily with your co-workers. The Twitter integration, like all our other integrations, has a privacy setting. You can choose to forward either all or some of your Twitter messages.

We've learned that one of the best ways to get people to update their status is by sending them an email at a random time of the day to ask them what they're up to. The reply to the email is posted as their status. Users can turn this on or off through their preferences.
